I am answering to my own question here, but I think this might help
someone else.

The XF3286 subdirectory of this distribution on the German mirrors had
binaries compiled with an older version of FreeBSD. This probably caused
the core dumps.
(Yesterday there was no 2.2.1-RELEASE subdir anymore on any German
mirror, so probably this problem will have vanished when the mirrors get
sync'd again)
