I use a German keyboard and tried to make my FreeBSD 2.1.5 display German
characters - without success.

I tried kbdmap, vidfont, kbdcontrol and vidcontrol without success:

*) vidfont sets another display font (8x16), that's what's visible to me

*) if I select the German ISO keyboard in "kbdmap", "kbdcontrol -d" lists
the proper character ASCII value for e.g the German u-umlaut, but when I
hit the u-umlaut key (or any of the keys with specific German characters on
them), nothing happens (all "umlaut"-keys seem to be dead keys)

*) I can see the German a-umlaut when i export "LANG=de" and call "kbdmap":
the top and bottom borderlines of the keyboard selection window contain
a-umlauts in uppercase; the character itself can be displayed, it seems

Anyone can help me out?
