I've been running an IRC server and ircII client for several months
now on 386BSD. (I also run the Iowa State server on a large Ultrix
machine.) If you have any problems/questions about getting irc to
work on 386BSD feel free to e-mail me. It works extremely well--very
little is required to get the programs up and running.
