Huh?  Who did tell you this?

Arguably, ATAPI CD-ROM support in 2.1.7 was weak, only higher quality
drives (that usually adhere more to the standard) work with 2.1.x
systems.  But 2.2 should work with a lot of drives.  (If you have one
that doesn't work, and want support for it, there's an offer by Søren
Schmidt that you can send him the drive and he'll see what he can do
for it.)
