I am running FreeBSD 2.1.7. It is an ATAPI cd-rom with standard
IDE controller from CNF inc. on PCMCIA card.

FreeBSD "sees" it. At boot it says: zp: PCMCIA slot0: CNF CD_M~CD_ROM~M1~
but the device zp0 is not found at the several ports that I have tried.

Help! I can't get this thing to mount. I would like to
install some packages.

Thanks.
