Sounds like a dodgy com port.  I believe there's some stuff in the FAQ
or handbook about changing the flags after booting -c.

Are you running X ?  If so, you can xconsole, otherwise I don't know
but I'm sure someone's written something.

That depends on your terminal emulator.
Your best bet is to try setting TERM to vt100, vt220 or ansi.  If this
doesn't help (and your terminal emulator isn't being helpful), you
can just do a "cat -vte" then type the stuff you're curious about
followed by a line-feed then a ^d.
