    I dunno regarding catalyst's, but the very first thing I would do
    is connect the two FreeBSD machines together with a null 10BaseT
    cable (i.e. no switch at all) and try the ftp to make sure there
    isn't cockpit trouble somewhere with the machine setup.

    The second thing I would do is connect the two machines together
    over the switch without *any* other machines on the network or in
    other switch ports, and see what you get.

    Then proceed from there based on your results....
