I don't think it's my monitor cable.  I tried booting with the monitor
disconnected from everything (ie. sitting dead on my desk with the
cables dangling uselessly) and it didn't change anything (well, except
my resolution).

It complains that I don't have permission to use shutdown (even when I'm
root!), so I say "oh, yeah?" and prove it wrong.  I'll sort that out
later (thanks, though).
