the 2.1 branch(which has officially ended with 2.1.7,though they said
nearly as much for 2.1.5,2.1.6,and 2.1.6.1) does not have certain new
features in the 2.2 branch, though it is presently considered more
stable...a 2.2.x release mid-year will likely combine the features
and stability, and development will then concentrate on the 3.0 branch.

I'd guess around year-end.
