You can at most have one window manager running per display at a time.
If the window manager is also your session leader (i.e., the last
entry in the .xsession file, run by exec'ing it over the xsession
shell), you can't change it unless the window manager itself allows
you to overlay itself (with another exec) by something else.  fvwm
does offer this option.

If you chose something else as your session leader (i usually pick an
xconsole for this purpose), you only need to exit (or kill) the
original window manager, and start another one (e.g. from within an
xterm).
