Besides the man pages, you should also look at the SAMBA homepage:

 http://lake.canberra.edu.au/pub/samba/

For a quick and dirty start, make up a reasonable configuration file
(/usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf), then run "smbd" and "nmbd" as root.  Look at
the other programs in /usr/local/samba/bin and then try accessing the server
from a windows box on your LAN.

Caveat:  I installed SAMBA straight from the distribution and it wanted to be
in /usr/local/samba.  I don't know if the ports/package are installed in the
same place, the samba binaries may be in /usr/local/bin.
