I have a similar situation.  I use the default config. to set the port,
speed, etc., then use the terminal mode in PPP to dial, login and
kickoff PPP on the remote.  Once PPP sees the remote sending the right
stuff, it will switch to packet mode.

Netscape doesn't figure into this...
