Yes, I've used ZIP drives on both FreeBSD and Windows NT (also DEC Unix
as well!) and they work OK on all systems.  FreeBSD did generate a
message on the console every time I changed a cartridge but it was only
informational.

The size of the drive is, as you say, 96MB (96x32x64 512 byte sectors).
Under UFS/raw, sequential data transfer is in the 800-900 KB/s range
which is quite good enough for backup (faster than most tapes!).  If you
can live with the size limitation, then it is a reasonable device for
doing relatively small dumps.
