I'm no vi black-belt, but vi happens to be my editor of choice. Once you get to know it, it is astonishingly quick and economical, and gives you access to the shell as well. In that sense, vi rates high on usability: I can't think of an easier-to-use editor, in fact. Of course, I can't think of a less intuitive and more peculiar- to-learn screen editor, either. Dave Tan
