I've yet to find a broken IDE interface, well, except for one that was really
broken (it ate a power surge. Even DOS couldn't see it).

I'd still recommend you go with SCSI, even if you never use FreeBSD, just
because it's so much easier.

And, yes, IDE/ATAPI CDROMs are supported.
