Your impression is incorrect.

There are already several free WP projects.  I would rather that they
not use Motif, but Star Write is one such WP that is in its 3rd beta
already.

Ok.  How bout vi+groff.  Worked well for me last time I tried it.  That
was 10 years ago, though!
