: | Unix doesn't have applications??? What are you talking about?
: | Do you mean Linux doesn't have any applications?

: Had you read the rest of my post it would have been clear. With
: Windows you have a choice of similar apps from multiple vendors,
: while with UNIX you typically have a choice between zero and one
: which will really address the problem, and maybe a few more which

: People who think {vi,emacs}+{groff,TeX} are a word processor should
: not quit their day job to sell UNIX word processing to the masses.
: The same is true for sc as a modern spreadsheet.

If I understand Bill's point, one chooses an OS by apps he/she uses.
But I don't understand the bashing about Unix. Most of the Unix apps
are not built for any home users. It is meant for mission critical
processes. Each OS addresses certain need for certain population.
I don't think we would want to have one OS for everyone. Isn't this
monoploy which no one wants anyway?

I want to know how people react to the following scenario. If the airline
industry has decided to switch the navigational system to be run on Win95,
Win95 is the only OS in the airplane. How many of you would still travel
by plane? Everything seems to make sense on the surface. Navigation is
being multi-task in the background. The pilot does WEB surfing in one
window and typing his diary with Office 97. The only catch is that
you don't know when the pilot might make the announcement about "GPF"
dialog box on his screen.
