Don't edit /etc/passwd or /etc/master.passwd directly, use the
vipw command.  It will open up the master.passwd file in your $VISUAL
editor.  When you make the changes and exit out of the editor, it will
automatically regenerate the the passwd databases that are used in
NetBSD's shadowed password setup.
