You will need to reconfigure the modem to be on COM1 or it won't work. 
This bug was fixed recently for the upcoming 2.2 release, ongoing
snapshots for which may be found on 22gamma.freebsd.org, and in the
recent 3.0-SNAP on ftp.freebsd.org if for some reason you cannot switch
your modem to COM1.
