The GPL doesn't just make software free.  It makes the GPLd software
and any software that builds upon it free.                  
It's this transitive bit that many find insidious.     

From the GCC info file:
       b. You must cause any work that you distribute or publish, that
          in whole or in part contains or is derived from the Program
          or any part thereof, to be licensed as a whole at no charge
          to all third parties under the terms of this License.

That doesn't necessarily mean that gzip code was integrated into WinZip.    
It means that something that has the same effect as gzip code was
integrated into WinZip -- that the authors of WinZip re-built the wheel.
