I have a 2.2-ALPHA distribution with a 3gb QF IDE HD with quite a few
partitions on it (msdos, ufs and ext2), and when I have a lot of
partitions mounted and shutdown the machine I've noticed that it will
sometimes print something like "4 4 4 4 4 4" and then give up trying to
umount the partitions properly. At the next boot, fsck complains about
/ and /usr not having the clean flag (although they usually appear
fine).

Is that a known problem? I know the ext2fs code isn't quite stable, but
it also does it on my UFS partitions, and if I manually umount things
before shutting down it doesn't do it.

If it's been fixed since -ALPHA, nevermind :)
