And that, of course, would have been the right solution (if I had the
XFree sources on my PC, or anything better than a diskette/IP connection
to the net) ... but as it turned out the problem was just that I was
running moused together with XFree, which caused all kinds of problems
(esp. when telling XFree to change the mouse's protocol).  

Without moused, ClearDTR/ClearRTS switch it to MouseSystems mode, and
the 3 buttons work.

Thanks for the suggestions though :)
