well, PnP you said? then just try to run its configuration utility
right while loading M$DOS and as the last step in autoexec.bat use 
fbsdboot to start FreeBSD... it's also possible to start FreeBSD in 
single-user(-s) mode or in kernel-config (-c) such way
Dont boot freebsd with its own bootstrap manager! ... and, well, you have to
create at least a small DOS partition to play with config/autoexec

I realize M$DOS sounds horror in this newsgroup :) 
but i really made two PnP cards (SB && network) configured this way 
to work fine with FreeBSD
