I have seen these discussions quickly turn into holy wars. But they are
both just operating systems, not religions.

I would consider myself to be non biased with these O/S's. I use BOTH,
but for different applications.
I beleive in using the right tools for the job, rather than making a
screwdriver into a prybar...

Here is what I do with them, YMMV of course.

Linux:
Personal workstation. No other O/S gives _me_ what I want for this. I
run WordPerfect, NeXs, dosemu for my credit card processing software,
and all the normal Utilities of course.
Single user ( me ) most of the time. Very fast and LOTS of documentation
and books available. Lots of help and users available.
Certainly a much larger user base to draw help from. (That does not mean
it is "better" though, any more than Windows is better than Linux.)

FreeBSD:
My Web Internet servers. The Security, the flexability, the speed,
all beat linux. Sorry. Wish it were not true, as I really like Linux.
Documentation and Book. A reasonable amount of documentation, and one
book that I know of... But, most BSD flavor Unix's are so similar that
the admin part is easy enough to figure out for the most part.
Somewhat less help available online, but plenty to get you by.
Performance under a heavy load is great.... no, it's better than that.

Just a random thought. Last time I checked, CDROM.COM used FreeBSD for
their FTP server. One of the worlds busiest sites.... If they can
afford multiple t-3's for their 100 mbps connection, I doubt that the
piddling cost of even the most expensive commercial OS is a factor.
In other words, they can AFFORD anything they want, they choose FreeBSD.
They sell both FreeBSD and Linux.

So, which is better?
Simple. You want to screw something into the wall, or pry something
off?

So, what ya want to DO is the biggest factor.
