I had the opposite problem with FreeBSD versus Red Hat. Though either
was a good deal easier than Windows NT... it eventually turned out that
there was a bug in the shipped install floppy, and the patched one
worked quite well. Until I found that out I was sitting there staring
at this prompt where it was asking me to enter LILO commands to get it
to find my SCSI card with zero explanation as to what LILO was and what
commands it accepted.

My recommendation, if I were to have been asked at that point (before I
found out what the problem was) would have been not to try installing Linux
without a good Linux expert at hand. Anecdotal evidence should be taken with
a grain of salt.
