I am not sure about the Sun, but on the Mac, you can use a program called dt
(desktop). It can be found at:
ftp://ftp.macbsd.com/pub/NetBSD/utils/dt/
In addition to allowing white text on a black screen, there are two different
font settings (big and small), it allows several "virtual consoles", and you
can use the mouse to copy and paste. Give it a try!
