I tried a dirty way (same reason as yours):
1. saving /etc sub
2. starting a freebsd installation with boot floppy and cdrom (or nfs)
3. selecting the smallest possible package (e.g. only bins)
4. going through the installation steps with mounting the existing
   partions (without any changes off course)
5. selecting the correct boot mgr configuration (mostly boot partition)
6. lets do the install programm the rest.
7. after rebooting restore your old /etc
8. this worked fine just yesterday :-)
