You need patch 3 ... the "big memory" fix.
You can build a new fixit.fs/dist.fs by stripping your new kernel so it will
fit on the disk, mounting the disk, deleting the old kernel off the disk,
copying your new kernel on, typing sync (VERY IMPORTANT!), and unmounting the
disk.
