A version of afio which was posted couple of years ago compresses in the
fly, has floppy support (write/verify/format) and is reasonably efficient.
It calls up compress for each file, so it is not the most efficient backup
program, but seems to be no problem, as reduced number of floppies to write
compensates for this.

A version of afio is in nic.funet.fi
/pub/arhive/comp.sources.misc/volume23/afio, but you might look around for
a later version.  This version might be later than the one I used, but I
guess there is not too much difference.
