I've recently installed both linux (redhat 4.0) and freebsd (2.2) and
had no problems with either. Not that I think that individual
experiences are really significant in this area, we'd need a big
survey...

I don't think that there is a clear case for one or the other system in
this area. Most installation problems with these systems are due to
marginal hardware (and i386 are becoming just this). There are
commercial systems much harder to install than either bsd or linux.
