What you're really asking, I think, is how to get knews not to read the
entire active file when you first connect.  Easy.  Just set the
Knews.readActiveFile resource to False.  You probably also want to do the
same with Knews.retrieveDescriptions, to avoid downloading the newsgroups
file as well.

I think that should do it.
