Btw., it should read ``1:sd(0,a)/kernel''.

Anyway, go to /sys/i386/boot/biosboot, and edit the Makefile.  There's
a parameter called HD_BIAS.  I think the value one is appropriate for
you.  After making and installing the new bootblocks, get them in
effect with

	disklabel -B sd0

You probably also need a boot manager.
