Yes, it does work.  There was a thread about this recently in
comp.mail.pine, in fact.  This really needs to be documented!

One small hitch, though: it's best *not* to use simply
{mailhost/pop3}INBOX for your Pine INBOX.  Better to create a folder and
have mail placed into it, otherwise every time you open your INBOX you
actually have to read from the remote, which is less than efficient (and
can create confusion also if Pine thinks certain mail items are still
around when they've been removed from the server).
