and considering that the cheapest flatbed scanners are now available
for about US$300 I would think twice before buying a hand scanner.

I have used two hand scanners (manufactured by Mustek, but sold by
Trust), and have written FreeBSD drivers for them. It is quite hard
to scan things moving the unit reasonably straight, and color units
must be moved unacceptably slow since they have so many data to
send, usually across a serial wire. Not to mention the difficulty
in putting slices together, and the incredibly bad quality of the
supplied drivers/application programs under Windows.

The BW unit is usable for scanning text at 400 true dpi, B/W only;
too bad it is not available any more (perhaps it was too cheap ?).
The color unit, max 200dpi (true resolution, it claims 400 but they
are interpolated) is totally unusable for text.
