I don't agree... I managed to install NetBSD 1.2 on a jaz cartridge
in a couple of days in my spare time. All I needed was the Install doc
and some FAQ file easily found on the net (always search for FAQs).
I rebuilt the kernel and installed X11 without probs.
I'm not an UNIX expert although I have some general knowledge about
computer systems.

I think that the informations one needs are already easily available
if one takes the time to open his eyes for the 99% of the times.

Are novices supposed to not read the docs or the FAQs?

No, FAQs are there just for that.
