The main drawback to socks 4 is that you need to get source code for all you clients and modify them to use socks and go through the firewall rather than trying to connect directly. This isn't a problem if the rest of your machines some unix for which you have the source code but it can be problematic with DOS clients. Trumpet Winsock for windows allows you to configure a socks server and this seems to work okay for Windows. I'm not sure what to do with Win95 and WinNT. In addition to this I run the firewall toolkit programs from TIS to restrict access and proxy services in from the outside world to my network. This nice because if worse comes to worse and you have a service that won't socksify there's probably a proxy for it.
