Many thanks to all who helped!  And I apologize for the delay in
posting these thanks.

The problem turned out to have been one bad connector on an
otherwise good internal SCSI cable--naturally, it was the connector
I'd used because it reached the drive most easily.  Sigh...

Hope everyone has had a Happy Christmas and will have a GREAT new
year!
