You have my condolences. I'm running a mixed environment at home, and an
even more mixed one at work. I find that Eudora is an eminently
practical e-mail package for Windoze -- runs nicely on 3.1, WFW3.11, and
95. I haven't seen it on NT yet, but if we ever actually go to an all-NT
setup at work, we will no doubt be using the MegaSlop mail system
instead. Eudora Lite is freeware; you can buy the Pro version if you
want the added capabilities.

The POP server is a FreeBSD box running 2.1R in both places -- no
problems serving mail to any of the other platforms we've tried.

My home connection is also a 33.6K dialup for now (when I win the
Lottery.... :-) ). My gateway machine is also my Web server and mail
server. Since it is a Web server, I'm using pppd with a 24/7 connection
to my ISP. I find that the main hassle with not buying a dedicated port
is that the ISP will dump you for inactivity, so as to free the port for
another user.

The best way to go, of course, is determined by what you want to do.
