Odd.  I ran NetBSD 1.0 and 1.1 on a machine with 2 ESDI disks and had
few problems.  When I low-level formatted the drives, my ESDI
controller gave me the option of leaving a spare sector per track for
remapping bad sectors; I did that and never had to mess with bad144.

The only problems I ever had were when I gave NetBSD and DOS different
geometries.  Once I cleared that up they ran flawlessly.
