This is probably irrelevant to your problem, but may be of interest to
developers--I get the
same 'vnode' error messages anytime I attempt to read from a Plextor
CDROM *and* write to
another device on the scsi bus. Same symptoms (no further access to
scsi disks; only commands
already in the disk cache work). Unlike your case, I have no periodic
ncr problems; I'm
ok if I don't try to copy from the CDROM. *ALSO*----the same problem
occurs under Linux
(except that the disk system remains usable--only the CDROM is a
problem).

My scsi card is a CSC (Corporate Systems Center) card with an 825 chip.
The Plextor is a
model PX65CS. I am reasonable certain that the initial problem is
hardware (the Plextor
has not worked since I got it 14 weeks ago, and I have upgraded both
Linux and FreeBSD to
the latest stable releases; [FreeBSD 2.1.6-RELEASE #0: Sun Dec 15
13:32:01 PST 1996])

My guess is that our problems are different (yours ncr chip, mine
CDROM), but the vnode
code is not handling the hardware problems gracefully.

BTW...I'm about to replace both the CSC and the Plextor; both are
substitutions by the
'web-order' supplier from whom I bought the system.
