I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but my home machine runs
"ppp -auto". I can dial into it and ping my ISP. The ping finds
the modem (that I'm dialed into) in use, and delays. When I drop
the line, ppp makes a connection to my ISP. Given 'net connectivity,
I can then connect to my home machine via the 'net.

It could be used to do a "call back" too - but I believe the hylafax
stuff does that a bit more elegantly (although I've never looked at
this feature).
