Using an active terminator may be the answer.  The original poster's 
problem is indictative of a possible termination problem,  but it doesn't
explain why the system worked with FreeBSD 2.0 as is in another poster's
system.  As soon as FreeBSD 2.1.6 is available on CD-ROM from Walnut Creek,
I'll be trying it with my BT-757C and we'll see how well it works.  
Hopefully I won't see a snafu with having a SCSI Zip drive hooked to the 
SCSI-3 external port.
