Here are two options I've used:

ZIP SCSI: US$150 for the drive, 100meg media are ~$15 apiece
Plus $50 or so for a cheap ISA SCSI controller
(I believe FreeBSD supports the Iomega ZIP SCSI controller,
which is cheap, widely available, and fast enough for
most tape, cdrom, and ZIP drives. Though I wouldn't use it
            for my primary hard disk.)

WangDAT 1300: US$300 for the drive (from CSC in Sunnyvale 408-743-8751)
2gig DDS-1 Tapes (90meter) are about $10 apiece from many places
(Again, plus the cost of a cheap SCSI controller)

You can also ask around University CS departments, and computer surplus
stores. You can often pick up used SCSI tape drives really cheap that
way.
