I can't explain why you have better results on the Compaq machine,
but we're running basically the same setup here using a
P55TP4N which is a slightly newer design of the same board.

Definately upgrade to 2.1.6; stability improved dramatically from
2.1.0 (which wasn't bad to begin with.)

: Hello:

: I have a Digital DEFPA PCI FDDI Controller which I'm trying to use
: with FreeBSD 2.1-RELEASE. When I attach the card to (an appropriately
: patched for PCI) Compaq Prolinea, it works OK, but when I attach
: it to my ASUS P/I-55TP4XE motherboard, I can't get it to work.

: The probe phase looks like this:

: /kernel: Probing for devices on the PCI bus:
: /kernel: chip0 <Intel 82437 (Triton)> rev 2 on pci0:0
: /kernel: chip1 <Intel 82371 (Triton)> rev 2 on pci0:7
: /kernel: fpa0 <Digital DEFPA PCI FDDI Controller> rev 0 int a irq 10
: on pci0:10
: /kernel: fpa0: DEC DEFPA PCI FDDI DAS Controller
: /kernel: fpa0: FDDI address 08:00:2b:b7:75:14, FW=2.46, HW=0, SMT V7.2
: /kernel: fpa0: FDDI Port[A] = A (PMD = ANSI Multi-Mode),
: FDDI Port[B] = B (PMD = ANSI Multi-Mode)
: /kernel: de0 <Digital DC21041 Ethernet> rev 17 int a irq 11 on pci0:12
: /kernel: de0: DC21041 [10Mb/s] pass 1.1 Ethernet address 00:00:c0:0c:73:c8
: /kernel: de0: enabling AUI port

: Then, later when it is ifconfig'ed up, I get this:

: /kernel: fpa0: Link Unavailable
: /kernel: fpa0: Halted: halt code = 3 (Software Fault)
: last message repeated 4 times

: At this stage the driver sucks up about 90% of my 75Mhz pentium
: until I ifconfig it down again.

: My guess is that there is some incompatibility between the ASUS
: MoBo and the FDDI card, but I don't know the MoBo, the driver or
: the FDDI adapter well enough to guess what exactly needs to be
: fixed.

: My line of attack will be to get the latest BIOS from ASUS, and
: see if it either helps, or provides more avenues for tinkering with
: the PCI settings, but I'm not confident about where that will lead.

: If anyone out there has real experience with these adapters and the
: FreeBSD driver, and recognises my symptoms, please let me know.
: Thanks.
