: Some comments on this:

: -) The adaptec cards are not the main target which is supportet by BSDi.
: Read the hardware compatibilty lists and look in the bsdi-users mailinglist
: archives to find the reasons. Keyword: Licence policy of Adaptec.

According to BSDI, the reason that the 3940UW is not supported is not a
Adaptec issue, but in fact a BSDI issue. When you are thinking you are
purchasing a "Grade A" OS, you expect to be able to run "Grade A" hardware.

: -) Your posting shows up a major missunderstanding of the way SCSI works.
: I'm pretty sure, that my systems provided with three SCSI controllers
: will show up a better performance.

I am very familiar with the way SCSI works. And having 3 controllers
will do me no good considering I cannot find a motherboard with more than
4 PCI slots. Currently, I have 1 PCI slot for a scsi controller, one for
a video card, and 2 for my ethernet devices.

: I really want to see a SCSI bus having 15 working scsi devices on one chain.
: By the way: You said "all the spools" Sorry, but what news software do
: you want to use ? Or do you think about the ccd(4) driver ?

I am referring to INND. Currently we have about 17gigs of HD space from
6 HD's. I want one chain to have sd0 (/ , /usr , /var) and sd1
(/var/news/etc). The other chain I would like to have my news spools
(/var/news/spool, /var/news/spool/alt, /var/news/spool/ etc..etc..etc..)
using 4gig(scsi).
I have seen SCSI chains with 15 "working" scsi devices, and if you would
like to make a trip to Chicagoland, I would be happy to get you a tour.

: -) There are supported RAID systems.

Yes, I have seen some RAID setups on BSD, unfortunately in order to get
it to work properly, you have to jump up and down 3 times on one foot,
while breathing through your nose, and bark like a dog 12 times
to get it setup right.

: -) BSD/OS is a real professional and commercial unix system.
: In the unix market it's common FIRST to decide the unix version you want
: to use.
: If you choose HP-UX, you'll go and buy a HP system, ... (to be continued)
: If you choose BSD/OS, you are strongly advised to buy the hardware
: supported by BSDi.

I bought BSDI before the adaptec cards were even really support well.
I used buslogic for a couple years before migrating to adaptec.
Yes, this is a commercial unix system, and BSDI has a responsibility
to it's owners to keep up with technology.

: -) Read the great papers written by Paul Vixie about good hardware for
: BSD/OS systems.
: -) If you really think, that a Linux driver will give you the throughput a
: 3940UW can manage, continue with your dream.

I was being sarcastic by saying I would use linux. I would never use
linux. I did install freebsd on a system, and I am getting great
performance out of the 3940UW, and is ready to go into production very
soon. Ive read the papers by Paul Vixie, but it just comes down
to what I believe to be acceptable performance for my network.
