As I recall, the cache was buggered...among other things.

:) Absolutely *NOBODY* has been able to tell me what the Tomcat III *IS*.
:) Tyan's web pages describe it as identical to the Tomcat II.

It isn't. :-) For one, the cache is now soldered to the motherboard.

:) Speed isn't my concern at this point. Something that will stay up for more
:) than a day before silently wedging is my goal.

I'm able to stay up indefinitely with pairs of BT-946's and BT-956's
on Tomcat I motherboards. Hmmm, maybe this belongs in alt.sex.stories? :)

:) Do you really think that cables and terminators would cause the entire
:) system to wedge with no messages?

They most certainly can. A marginal cable and/or terminator can completely
ruin your day without giving any kind of usable input to the OS as to the
cause. Been there, done that...now I buy "the good stuff". :-)

:) I see such claims often. Could you back it up by stating exactly what
:) you consider high-end cables & terminators, and where they can be purchased?

Sure, check out DEC Direct. I've had nary a problem since I switched to
their $60 "thick as your thumb" cables. As for FPT terminators, I've
been getting mine from Ingram Micro I think (I'll have to check). I
believe I also got Adaptec "high end" cables from Ingram for fast/wide
systems and those were in the $60-70 range too. And if you think
cable/terminator quality has no bearing on performance, I can see why
you have problems keeping your boxes up for more than 5 minutes. You
see "such claims often" because folks that know what they're doing have
tried the shoestring route and gotten burned, especially with fast/wide
devices.

Good luck. Sounds like you'll need it.

Chris
