I believe this policy has changed recently, as it seems both the linux
and FreBSD guys have access to the driver info they need now.

Indeed. The DTP card would be my first choice and it's got a company
supported driver. You can get a pretty good deal on a DTP card, ask
about their reseller deal. Most ISPs probably can qualify if you also do
consulting.

You might be surprised at the latest linux. There's at least one linux
based news server in the FreeNix top 25 now. That said, the admin of
that machine knows linux very well. If you're not a tweekoid admin who
likes to do a lot of tuning and fiddling, you're probably better off
with BSDI. My latest BSDI 2.1 based news machine has been up 100% since
I assembled it in March. It's only downtime is from a move to a new
location and one time the backup UPS failed on a power outage.

Of course it only hovers in the 75-100 range on the FreeNix list.
