First, sorry for the cross posting, but I wasn't really sure where to
place this query.

I am interested in obtaining some type of Unix, to use initially for
general writing and record keeping, Internet use, and to eventually
develop applications. I currently use NT Workstation 4.0, but have used,
at various times, Win95, MacOS 7.5, OS/2 2.1, and of course DOS/Win3.x.
I know there is no universal scale, but I would guess I am relatively
computer literate.

I'm hoping to get recommendations from any Unix people, preferably
people
familiar with more than one release of Unix, as to what would be the
best release to choose? Any pointers to relevant web sites would be
appreciated also. Oh, I should mention, I'm looking for an
inexpensive/free release.

There are so many choices available, it is difficult to choose -
SCO OpenServer, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and all the flavors of Linux.

Thanks all,

Brian
