Probably 'cos the redirection is attempted before executing sudo, and
you're not allowed to write /dev/lpt0.

I take it that /var/spool/lpd/deskjet is writable by lpd.  Do you know
if your filter is being called ?  Try putting some diagnostics in there
(or if it's a program, put a script in front of it).
