Of course this should be functionally the same as "wd(1,0)/kernel"
because the BIOS disk 1 should always be the same as wd1 (if wd1 is
known to the BIOS - and if it's not, you cannae boot it anyway !).

The only time you need the bit before the colon is when the BIOS drive
number is not the same as the scsi drive number - ie. when you've got
some IDE disks that the BIOS knows about.

Hmm, this is definitely a case of WTFM ! :)
